overweight

Gaining weight can have many causes.  We do not all put on weight for the same reasons.  If we eat balanced meals, regularly and not too much, while maintaining a frequent and regular physical activity for about one hour a day, we do NOT put on weight, except for some rare pathological conditions.  To put it in a nutshell : bad eating habits make you fat.

In our modern western societies (Europe and the U.S. of A. especially), well over one third of the population is overweight, including children.  To put it bluntly :  most people eat and drink too much of bad nutritional quality products, and do too little physical exercise.  So they put on weight.  Hereditary and genetic factors are far from proven, and there may be an inverse causal factor involved : overweight and obesity can cause so much disruption and malfunction that it may well alter some protein structures, and hence parts of AND-ARN chains.  Genetic mutations sometimes reported in obese cases could then be a consequence, and not a cause, of obesity.

Overweight people do not feel well.  The extra weight they have to carry around all the time weighs on their back, their hips, their legs, their knees and their ankles and feet.  This weight presses and crushes the mower joints which may rapidly deteriorate.  Their legs, knees, ankles and hips often hurt. They are often out of breath, hot and sweaty, but with cold hands and feet.  Concentrations of fatty tissue all over the body prevents blood from circulating, and hence proper oxygenation of muscles and other organs like the lungs, the kidneys, the liver and the brain.  They also disturb thermal exchanges that regulate body temperature.  Overweight often causes serious cardiovascular conditions.  It can also trigger diabetes.

Unwanted weight gains, whether sudden or progressive, must always be reported to a medical doctor or a nutritionist as soon as possible.  This change could be due to emotional and psychological causes, and it will be more easily resolved with psychological treatment.  But at the same time learning healthy nutritional habits, adopting regular physical activities (gymnastics, swimming, yoga, hiking, etc.), and regular shiatsu sessions will prove very useful to build up references for a mental and physical balance necessary to master one’s own health.
