Stress
affects us because we let it affect us. |
Stress is
everywhere in modern life : pollution in the atmosphere, noise in cities,
tensions in neighborhoods, pressure at work, crowds around us, hot and noisy stores,
crowded public transports, traffic jams, daily worries, the future of our
children, suspicious spouses and friends, etc. All these contribute to confused feelings
of helplessness and powerlessness, frustration and envy, anger or
resignation, which can lead us to self-destructive behaviors like bulimia,
depression, aggressiveness, and to deteriorating relationships and work
situations. |
The
effects of stress, if not controlled, can have serious consequences on our
health and on our behaviour in general.
In some cases, they can produce obsessive attitudes that may rapidly
disturb (and destroy) references to our personal and professional
environments. |
Many
symptoms can appear as a result of stress, but in most cases the person shows
a rapid and significant change in behaviour :
depression, insomnia, twitching, bulimia, alcoholism (even “light”), aggressiveness, fear,
nightmares, anxiety, to name but some of the more common. |
As soon
as the first symptoms appear, one must look for professional (medical or
psychological) help. Nutrition and shiatsu will prove a very efficient and useful support to
medical treatment. Nutrition helps us to become aware of our dietary habits and of the role of food in keeping us
healthy. Shiatsu helps us relax and find connection
with our own body. It also helps us
distance ourselves from the obsession of stress to build up positive and
constructive attitudes. |
As it is
for us often almost impossible to act on the cause of stress, it is better to
focus on learning to protect ourselves from deleterious effects of stressing
situations. We will be able to use
this new ability also in other occasions for a very long time. |
